May 17 was graduation day at Brookdale Community College and Greg Mortenson was invited as the keynote speaker and to receive an honorary degree. More than a hundred supporters of the "Knowledge is Power - Three Cups of Tea" project came for a special tea with Greg - except that Greg ended up not coming to NJ that day! (He has promised us a make-up day on January 27, 2010.) With the help from dozens of great supporters we still had a delicious tea, and the students from local schools presented their projects.  Kirsten's friend Gerda Liebmann volunteered to make all the tea - if she could get a photo with Greg.  We still owe her that! In October Kirsten and Per met Greg at a fundraising dinner in New Brunswich, NJ - and Kirsten officially had her "third cup of tea" with Greg. Christine Fogler, social studies teacher at Ocean Township Intermediate School was inspired to do a Pennies for Peace project in the fall which ended very successfully with a Middle Eastern tea for the choir.

• Solar Panels and Per's Tesla •

It all began with a book for 'dummies' on solar energy that Per got for Christmas in 2008. After finishing the book he started researching vendors for our solar adventure. Since any shading is 'deadly' for production, all chimneys and vents had to be eliminated from the roofs. Another step was to get a new energy efficient furnace and water heater. Solar panels were installed in July and production started in August.  The best day produced 55 kWh in one day. In the spirit of reducing greenhouse emission, Per decided to buy an electric car. His Tesla Model S will be delivered in 2012.

• Moving into the Dorm •

One of the perks of having an on-campus job (as a Student Ambassador) is that Maj was able to move into her dorm room on August 28th, two days before everyone else. With the help of Kirsten and Per, Maj moved into the seventh floor of Freeman Hall at Montclair State University. In just a few hours (after moving countless boxes up 7 flights of stairs since the elevator was "out of order"!) the room was transformed into her new home away from home.

Cali (whom the University's new Music School is named after!) was a guest and friend of the hosts. Scott and Taylor were invited to sing a song for Cali and the guests! After returning from Thanksgiving break, the family geared down for the final 2 weeks of class and Finals Week. In between the chaos, the group attended the school's annual Winter Ball, and took a trip to New York City to go skating in Central Park. Finally they celebrated their own mini-Christmas on their last weekend together, complete with a Secret Santa exchange, their own Christmas tree, and holiday cheer!
